Xingyang, located in the heartland of the Central Plains of China and 15 kilometers west of the proper of Zhengzhou City the capital of Henan Province, boasts the county-level city closest to the provincial capital. With the Long Hai Railway, No. 310 National Way, Kai-Luo Freeway, Zhengzhou Round-the-Town Fast Way, Lian Huo Freeway, Southern Water to North Project, and Western Gas to East Project all going through the territories, it is one of the cities in the economic hunching belt formed by the city group in the Central Plains that possess the greatest vigor of development. The city has a total area of 908 square kilometers and a population of 620000.

    Starting from the establishment of a county here in the Qin Dynasty, Xingyang has got a history of more than 2200 years. In the ancient times it had been acclaimed as “an area neighboring the Eastern Capital and the throat to the area of San Qin”. Now across the land are numerous historical relics and cultural sites, such as the well-known “The Border between Chu and Han”, the Two Towns of Kings Han and Hegemony, Hulao Pass where the three heroes of Liu, Guan and Zhang fought Lu Bu, the ruins of a capital city of Zheng Dukedom, Donglin Temple, the tomb of Liu Yuxi, and so on. Huancuiyu, a provincial-level scenic spot, has been highly honored in the verse of “The mountains and waters in Guilin are the best across the country; The scenery of Huancui a best all over the Central Prefecture”. In addition, Xingyang is the fatherland of the Zhengs, a reputed Chinese family all over the world.

    In 2003, Xingyang, based on the its unique regional advantages, established its overall work guidelines that place great stress on practical and effective efforts for promoting development, vigorously developing industrial projects and firmly focusing on the strategy of introducing funds and businesses from the east while expanding to the east. Ever since then, Xingyang has been, oriented to the developed areas along China’s southeastern coasts, powerfully soliciting and introducing investment and businesses and actively facilitating the industrial transfer, whilst developing city construction towards the east, actively approaching the city of Zhengzhou, merging itself in Zhengzhou in an initiative manner, and receiving the radiation and driving of the Greater Zhengzhou with increasingly good effects, through building the East Area and the series of Suohe Road, Kangtai Road, Jianshe Road, Zhengshang Road, Zhongyuan West Road, etc.

    Under such guidelines of development, Xingyang has achieved a spanning economic growth: realized a fiscal revenue of 270 million yuan in the first half of 2005 which is the total of the revenue for the whole 2003; introduced 28 projects, each with an investment of above 100 million yuan, from 2003 to the end of June 2005, and 11 of the total were inked in the first half of 2005.

    Presently Xingyang has developed the seven leading industries of automobile, coal, electricity and aluminum, valve manufacturing, construction machinery, pharmaceutical and chemistry, building materials, food and light textile, as well as five major industrial parks. The Shaolin Auto has gained a title of one of “China’s Famous Brands” and secured markets in south and southeastern Asia, etc; the sale of valve and building machinery has taken half of the whole country’s market, thus has brought about to Xingyang the titles of “The Land of Valve in China” and “The Land of Building Machinery in China”. Thanks to the sound agricultural basis, Heyin Megranate used to be the produce provided to the imperial family and has been enjoying an established reputation; Xingyang Persimmon is renowned across the country and the persimmon frost has been a rare medicine and food; and the Wanshan Winter Peach has earned an extensive fame for being delicious and tasty. The leading planting enterprises have come to 45 while professional agricultural associations 7 (including 18 branches). “The Order Form Agriculture” has made 65000 farmer households increase income by 85 million yuan, with the household average income increase reaching 1300 yuan. 

    In the year of 2004, Xingyang achieved 10.97 billion yuan in GDP, 402 million yuan in fiscal revenue, 7646 yuan in urban resident per capita disposable income, and 3875 yuan in farmer per capita pure income. The city has taken the fifth place in integrated economic strength in the whole province for three successive years. Furthermore it has been successively elected a National Scientifically and Technologically Advanced County (City), a National Advanced County (City) for Sports, a National Advanced County (City) for Quality Family Planning Services, a Henan Provincial-level Public Health Civilization City, a Key County (City) for Opening up in Henan Province, and a County (City) with Expanded Power in Henan Province.
